James E. Murdoch was one of the foremost American actors of the 19th century. For years, he was considered the best performer of Hamlet on the American stage. His career began in Philadelphia in 1829, but he made Cincinnati his home in 1850. When the Civil War broke out, he devoted himself wholly to the Union cause. The Main Library commissioned a bust of Murdoch when he died in 1893.
Join Chris Smith, Cincinnati historian, for a talk on the life of this great actor and his bust, which is on view in the Main Library’s Cincinnati Room.
