Tales from the Stacks: Wild (and Sometimes Weird) Romance

Written by Adam Vorobok, Reference Librarian, Downtown Main Library  Hurrying down to A-stacks on a fresh assignment, I tackle it with an energy akin to love. Perhaps it was the arrow shot into my brain by some giddy imaginary cherubim. A fun and lighthearted paranormal romance novel set with a mystery at the center of the story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. With quipy dialogue and one-liners that would be at home in an action comedy, this book flew by. Laurenston has also released sequels to this book that keep up with all your favorite characters.

Review excerpt: "When I recommend Shelly Laurenston’s books to readers whose tastes I’m not entirely familiar with, I often include some caveats: her writing style is unique, and while I enjoy it tremendously, I know it doesn’t work for everyone. Her characters talk like real people, real smart-alek people, and they get into situations that are often so completely over the top you either have to surrender to the campy, extraordinary fun or you might be annoyed by it."

A fun and fast paced read, this book is written in a cinematic style that draws the reader in to a complex series of interweaving narratives. Laurenston pulls you in with witty banter, and keeps you intrigued plenty of mystery and action. There are a few weak points, chief among them being the romance. The seeming predestination of Charlie and Berg's relationship is somehow strikingly unrealistic in a novel that contains shapeshifters and a wide array of comic mayhem. In addition, the story wraps up abruptly, with little resolution of the conflicts set up in the rest of the book. Worth a read if you want the action, but be prepared for a sour taste in your mouth if you like a clean and tidy ending.
